The tour starts with Angkor Wat the largest religious complex ever built and ranked as one of the wonders of the world. We then continue to the ancient city of Angkor Thom which was once the world’s largest city and former political capital under King Jayavarman VII. You enter through the famous South Gate to see Bayon, the Terrace of Elephants and the Leper King, and finally the Golden Palace, Phimeanakas with its beautiful Royal baths.

TOUR BACKGROUND. The temple of Angkor Wat is probably the most famous and well known of all the Angkor temples in Cambodia. Built by the Khmer almost a millennium ago, the temple of Angkor Wat is one of the largest and most important archaeological sites in the world, and every year is visited by millions of tourists. This huge temple that today also corresponds to the eponymous archaeological site is only five kilometres from the city of Siem Reap, Cambodia and springs up from the dense forest.

In the twelfth century AD King Suryavarman II built the huge sacred complex in just 30 years. But it became known to the rest of the world only in 1860 thanks to the French explorer Henri Mouhot who described it in his diary as: “… built by some ancient Michelangelo…

The harmony of the Temple of Angkor is indeed comparable to the architecture of classicism, characterized by perfect proportions and a chorus that embraces the many buildings. With its typical decorations: such as the charming apsaras (or devata), divine feminine and seductive nymphs who lead you to madness or the bass-carvings depicting scenes from the Mahabharata or the Ramayana (Hindu epics poems).

It seems that the most reliable theories about the function of this huge religious complex, the largest in the world, are two: the first is that it should be the mausoleum of King Suryavarman II, the second is that it was built in honour of the God Vishnu, one of the three divine forms, Trimurti, and later converted in Theravada Buddhism.
